Proclamation We, the undersigned, do hereby proclaim that: Whereas Dr. Dan Webb as Principal of the El Segundo Middle School, effected the following improvements in measurable results: Star testing- Four consecutive years of improvement- rare among any school in California API Base- from 780 in 1999 to 853 in 2002 % Honor students Approximately 65% made the honor roll with each report card Highest statewide rank 10 in 2003, similar school rank 10 (from a 6 in 1999) Homework- A key to success, at one time teachers reported an unprecedented 99% of all homework turned in. Physical Fitness- The middle school has the highest ranking . Parent Survey- Reliably 80% of the parents surveyed expressed satisfied or very satisfied with all aspects of the middle school operation. Whereas Dr. Dan Webb improved the readiness of Middle School students for High School through: 90% of class of 2007 is completing college prep curriculum. Raising math proficiency - This year approximately 50% of the Freshmen will enter taking Geometry and another 40% will enroll and pass Algebra I. Raising English proficiency Emphasized an understanding that the five paragraph essay is a minimum requirement. Creating feeder programs for ESHS Choir and Band. Development of excellent study/homework skills Whereas Dr. Dan Webb affected the following in terms of improvements and compliance with district policies: Attendance- 97% positive attendance Truancy- Rare Decreased suspension rate from 89 in 1999 to 55 in 2002 Dress code violations- Rare, students were aware of the expectations and consequences. Behavioral incidents- In a big year we might have one or two fights at school. Drugs and alcohol- No drug or alcohol suspensions in nearly four years. Two incidents of cigarettes found on campus in nearly five years. Led the district in implementing technological improvements such as Power School, School Notes, online access to the Bulldog Bulletin & parent e-mails Before school nutrition program on campus. Instituted KPR program everyone (administration, teachers, staff, parents, and students) treated one another in a Kind, Polite and Respectful manner. Whereas Dr. Dan Webb implemented significant improvements to the following enrichment programs at the Middle School: Spanish Curriculum- Full speaking labs implemented. Enrollment in Spanish has tripled. Band- Funds were found to supplement this program when the district was unable to fully supply the needed resources. Choir- Funds were found to supplement this program when the district was unable to fully supply the needed resources. In the case of both band and choir there has been a marked academic improvement in the students enrolled in those programs. Both choir and band have been rated as Outstanding in national competitions. The choir and band award nights draw at least 500 adults to the middle school campus. GATE- hugely successful trips to theater events, AstroCamp and Catalina Camp. Art- Expanded from two periods to six periods of Art each year. Ocean Safety Day- One of the most popular and fulfilling events that all sixth graders look forward to. After-school library hours- A crucial accomplishment for providing support to those who don\'t have resources (reference books, computers) at home. After-school sports programs funded by the golf tournament Dr. Webb enlists the teachers to work at each summer. Whereas Dr. Dan Webb implemented additional extracurricular programs for our students: Science Club Builder\'s Club Toast Minors Tree Musketeers Cotillion Drama Club PTSA Whereas Dr. Dan Webb welcomed the participation of parents, resulting in the creation of the following programs: Parents on Campus- What other middle school welcomes five to ten parents each day to visit with the kids at lunch Character Counts- The cornerstone to any successful school is character building and values clarification. The middle school has been aggressive in pursing this basic phase of the educational process. Student of the Month - One of the most popular parent activities and the culminating activity of Character Counts. PTA membership- Number of participating parents increased for 358 in 1998 to 657 in 2003. PTSA implementation-The PTSA has evolved into a working group that has made genuine and significant contributions to the school. The inclusion of the students in the decision making process makes the Middle School a consensus building enterprise. Trade Show- Introducing students and parents to ways to be involved and engaged in ESMS. Rather than something to dread, both Back to School Night and Open House are events parents actually look forward to attending. Whereas Dr. Dan Webb spearheaded the following improvements to the Middle School Campus: Bulldog Hall improvements including the sound system, acoustic improvements, room divider, and lighting improvements Library resources enhanced through annual Bookfair implemented during his tenure. School Site Council and PTSA Gift Committee purchased Bulldog Hall partition, computers, printers, digital cameras, projectors, scanners, science lab equipment, Spanish lab equipment, band instruments, choir risers, math remediation program among others. Fought for air conditioning and quad shade. Implemented having projectors installed from classroom ceilings so that the teachers and students could have technology based classrooms. Whereas Dr. Dan Webb improved the morale and commitment of the teachers at the Middle School No grievances in the past five years 95% have achieved their CLAD (Cross Cultural Language & Academic Development). Whereas Dr. Dan Webb was publicly recognized for his contributions: Honorary Service Award (HSA) recipient from PTA Rotary Service Award- President elect Very Special Person Award (VSP) from the Faculty Staff Member of the Month from the ASB And whereas Dr. Dan Webb\'s long hours, insistent requests and dogged commitment were always in service of the best interests of El Segundo\'s Middle School students, Therefore, we the undersigned El Segundo parents, teachers and students resolve that Dr. Webb embodied a commitment to academic excellence, high behavioral standards, and unrelenting progress toward ambitious improvement goals; and that the actions of the Board of Education and Superintendent Mr. Bruce Auld to remove Dr. Dan Webb from his position as Principal of El Segundo Middle School do not represent the best interests of the students or the community.
