The petition
While there is no exact account for the number of dogs and cats living on the streets of Egypt it is estimated 1.5 million strays. In response to a means of control the Governate in Cairo was undergoing a massive poisoning campaign of stray dogs and cats a few years back in 2005. Although we know that this is still happening all over Egypt and attempts to stop them have failed, shootings now occurs on a massive scale.
Below is one of the many pictures taken by myself documenting a widespread practice by the authorities of shooting dogs as a means of population control. People from the area told me it was common practice. They were shot in the middle of the afternoon, in broad daylight.
Minister of Agriculture who oversees the General Organization for Veterinary Services is responsible for the authorization of this crime along with the Ministry of Tourism.
The solution is NOT poisoning and shooting animals on the street. It is cruel and abhorrent, and further it is not even an effective means of reducing the street population.
Your help is need to urge the Egyptian government to stop the killings/poisoning and implement a TNR program (trap-neuter-immunize-release) and more humane methods to control the situation.
We haven’t yet been able to achieve a ban on this terrible practice. We need to show the authorities in Egypt that many people around the world are watching and will not continue to let this happen.
