Hawaii, an island located in the Pacific Ocean with about 1.4 million people has very, very poor education.Only private schools can afford to have a decent education program. 4 schools are shutting down because of cutbacks. In High school they are learning things they should be learning in Middle and Elementary school. Children need more time to learn and teachers need more time to teach. Hawaii had one of the shortest school years in the country, now made even shorter by furlough Fridays. The quality of classroom time is critical to learning, but so is the quantity.

"Furlough Fridays" were mandatory furlough days the Hawaii State Board of Education forced on public school teachers and personal beginning in 2009 as a response to state budget problems. The Hawaii State Legislature cut the Hawaii Department of Education budget by a total of $469 million for the 2009-2011 school years Regardless of how quickly furloughs end, our school system needs complex system.Hawaii has the fewest instructional days during school of any other state in the U.S. The furlough situation has reduced the amount of days even more.

Because Hawaii is mixed with different racial groups, we are faced with multicultural groups who may not know the English language. Therefore Hawaii tends to be under averaged when it comes to test scores. In 2005 two-thirds of Hawaii schools failed to reach the minimum level in reading and math skills.
