The petition
City of Edinburgh Council provide facilities for public recycling of plastic and cardboard, however there is NO such provision for any schools in Edinburgh. Although it is possible for schools to create a public recycling site on their grounds that CEC will collect from, this public access set up is not suitable for the majority of schools.
Schools in Edinburgh accommodate over 46 000 pupils and we produce a great deal of plastic and cardboard waste in the one location. This waste currently goes to landfill and is subject to Landfill Tax. This shocks us and we feel that CEC should demonstrate to our young people, through ACTION that as a city we are truly committed to lessening our environmental impact.
Waste Aware Edinburgh tell us that recycling facilities across the city will help to deliver an additional 1 million tonnes of recycled material by 2020. Schools want to be a part of this delivery.
The CEC tell our pupils that they are “committed to providing a cleaner and safer environment to live in”, we want to see this commitment in every one of our schools.
Please sign this petition to encourage the council to provide the required facilities for all schools.
