City of Edinburgh Council says that the global financial crisis lies behind its inability to fund schools. Nice to hear that the economic illiteracy of the banks will affect the future literacy of children in Edinburgh. But wait! While our main anger might rightly be directed at the bank bosses who seem to think they need a bonus while presiding over the biggest bail-out in corporate history (think about the best teacher you ever knew - did she or he need a bonus to perform at that exceptional level?), do we not also hear the grinding sound of bucks being passed? The Scottish Government says that the City of Edinburgh Council's revenue grant is increasing by 1.9% next year. So why, when "frontline services" are going to be protected are schools budgets being cut by 2.5%?
