Comments: I wholeheartedly agree that the County should adhere to the City's comprehensive plan, reject the current plans for the project and seriously consider the alternatives listed above. I wrote to my representative, Jean Schlieve,and Mr. Bruce Willet, Chairman, in May 2007, stating this. To date, I have not received a response from either one.

Comments: 1) Putting a new jail in place as the centerpiece of a revitalized downtown EC reflects some pretty screwed up priorities. Shouldn't we save that premium parcel of land for something that generates tax revenue 2) The fact that the county board can circumvent a referendum (albeit with a budget that some claim is dishonest) and authorize a jail while the school board must ask permission to keep our schools open is also rather disturbing - and again reflects a screwed up set of priorities in our community - at least among its elected leaders.

Comments: I am particularly galled that this issue will apparently not be put up for referendum with the voters. This subterfuge by the board to do an end run around taxpayer desires smacks of favoritism, corruption and lack of imagination on the part of corrections. I suspect that the board knows that the jail and the bonding would not be approved by the taxpayers. I agree that in many situations, alternatives to incarceration are certainly more effective, and cost efficient. And why ruin the potential beauty of the riverfront with a damned jail.

Comments: The building of the new jail is both a display of a misplaced $60 million and a disregard for our community's historical heritage. Knocking over historical homes and small businesses as well as tying up a beautiful piece of this gorgeous city is a complete disappointment considering all the work that went into downtown restoration in the past few years. Comments: I find it outrageous that the county and city board would approve such an extremely high-dollar project that we the people will ultimately pay for, when clearly there are so many people against spending money in this manner. People all across this county are losing homes due to the current economic state, and so many others are having to live so frugally that there is little money left over for much else, and then there's GAS! How dare you people even propose such a project! Try not busting people for such stupid things and see how much jail space opens up! What are the majority of people in jail for If those "criminal" acts do not directly involve children or violence then don't put them in a cage like a vicious beast, treat them like humans and cut them loose with a fine. For god's sake we all know that this jail will wind up going grossly over budget, meanwhile the police look for more ways to lock up people to prove you need more space to house them. We should be finding less ways to lock people up, and focus more on the few bad apples then making more and more people feel like they are unfit for society.
