We the citizens of Eau Claire County urge the Eau Claire County and City Boards to consider the long-range needs of our county and city and to hear and respect the concerns of its people. We oppose the current plan to expand the courthouse and jail between First Avenue and Second Avenues and between Lake Street and Grand Avenue. To more effectively serve the immediate and long-term needs of the people of Eau Claire County, we demand that the County and City Boards examine: 1) Alternatives to the Demolition of Homes (historical, family and affordable rental housing) in the Courthouse District neighborhood and request that the board re-examine Recommended Plan #2 (split campus) 2) Alternatives to Housing Prisoners Next to Court such as Video TeleConferencing for all communication except final sentencing (secure and saves inmate transportation costs) 3) Alternatives to Incarceration: more research into the economic and social benefits of treatment and social services for non-violent offenders. 4) Suggestions Previously Dismissed by the County that meet the financial, logistical and security demands of the county and city.

I really thought this might just fizzle out in a quiet corner of the internet but seeing how many people are actually talking about this now is just wild. It is honestly kind of overwhelming to wake up and see that the momentum has grown so far beyond my own little circle of friends who were worried about those houses on Lake Street. I have to figure out how to get this in front of the board members because the local news is starting to poke around and ask questions which is terrifying but also exactly what we need.

This is our neighborhood not a prison yard. Save these houses please.

Keep the heart of our city alive. Tearing down those houses for a jail expansion is just wrong when there are other options on the table.

WE DONT NEED A GIANT JAIL BLOCKING UP LAKE ST. FIND A DIFFERENT SOLUTION THAT DOESNT WRECK THE DISTRICT!

Lived here my whole life and this plan is just plain lazy. There are better sites than right in the middle of our community.

Look at the budget. Video conferencing saves tons of money and we dont need a massive jail right downtown. Stop the demolition.

Ridiculous to destroy historical homes for this. Why arent we looking at treatment programs instead of just locking everyone up?
