To Members of the Fairfield Board of Education:

We, the parents of Timothy Dwight Elementary School, are concerned with several issues contained in Woodard & Curran’s PCB Assessment Report of Dwight School.   These concerns have been brought to the attention of Central Office and are as follows:

1) We need the fireproofing material on Dwight's gym to be chlorine screened by Woodard & Curran.  It is unacceptable that only a visual inspection was done and no chlorine screening because the "material was not accessible for the primary chlorine screening".  We request that this be done as soon as possible so results can be communicated to our school community before the end of the school year.

2) We need to find out if the stone flooring at Dwight, which was cited in the report as being "visually similar flooring" to that in Osborn Hill School, is covered with the same sealer as was used in Osborn Hill.  The sealer applied to the stone flooring in Osborn Hill was tested and found to contain PCBs.  We acknowledge that the report states that "It is not known if this material was manufactured with PCBs or contained PCBs as a result of a cross-contamination effect from the gymnasium source" at Osborn Hill.  However, we believe it is imperative that the sealer used at Dwight is investigated further.

3) Woodard & Curran recommended follow-up evaluations at Dwight, which "could include more detailed inspection and survey of suspect materials with follow-up interim measures, as needed, to potentially include covering any deteriorating sealants or suspect sealants in high exposure potential areas;"  We would like to know the timeline for such work at Dwight.

We respectfully request the Board of Education’s prompt attention to these issues.   Additionally, we request a response on these action items prior to the next meeting of the Dwight PTA on Tuesday, June 4, as an update will be expected by our community at that time.

Thank You,

Concerned Members of the Timothy Dwight School Community
