Sarah RobertsDurham is one of the best universities in the world and has a really prayerful cathedral at its heart. The bookshops calibre had once meant that learning was entwined with prayer but there is too much politics bound up in this and they are not treating their staff well which is why I am signing this petition. I hope it will not be a financial burden to you to take over the shop but it will be of benefit to many.

Pauline EdwardsTake back the bookshop, before all the Christian bookshops are dead and buried. This is your responsability to save the shop.

Eirlys PennIt appears to be time to take action; enough damage has been done.

Andrew BullwerAcademic bookseller in Leicester. My employer, the University of Leicester wants a good local linked bookshop. It puts up space and finance. Lots of people benefit, not just local students. We trade worldwide. PLEASE take a stand and make a tough decision.
AnonymousThis petition seems to me to be akin to the recent pressure placed on SPCK such that they have issued an updated statement on their position. I can imagine that there are complex legal issues here. I am signing the petition to support the Dean and Chapter in working to resolve a very difficult situation for all concerned.

jacqui smithDifficult implications for Dean and Chapter. Given the chance, the Brewers will take over your cloister. They believe that they rent your space on their terms. Surely the sanctuary knocker was not meant for the like of them.

Mark BennetIsn't Venerable Bede's grave in Durham? We need the Cathedral to be a beacon for high-quality Christian literature - and that's quite apart from all the other issues.
Anthony ArcherThis has been a dire episode. Anything the Dean and Chapter can do would be welcome. I am sure they will be assume all the powers at their disposal to attempt to restore the status quo ante. Anthony Archer General Synod 393 (St Albans)

(Canon Dr) Nicholas TaylorThe need for a reputable bookshop to serve a learning Church ought to be self-evident, and essential to the role of the Cathedral in education.
AnonymousThe experience of the staff in the hands of SPUK at Durham is not an isolated case. The staff at the Truro branch have also been treated in a most dispicable way and many staff have been driven out.

Karen McMullenI have bought many books from Durham Cathedral in the past and always considered it to be a great book shop. How half the shelves are empty and a lot of really good authors aren't even represented there - and there's nowhere else in Durham to go and find them. Something really does need to be done!
Rachel RomainAs a theology graduate of the University of Durham (St. Mary's College, 2001-2004) I have been a very happy customer of the bookshop over recent years. A visit to Durham Cathedral last month brought heartache - empty shelves, tearful and desperate staff... the place is a sorry shadow of its former self. Please, please, do what you can to rebuild this shattered bookshop - for the good of the Cathedral and University communities, and the region as a whole. We need this bookshop! Thanks.

Julian DoncasterI am concerned about the way these shops have been managed and the organisations running the SPCK shops - including Durham - have been bouncing around like pinballs. I would ask you to intervene in the case of the Durham Shop, which is affecting the reputation of the Cathedral.
Mark BurgessTheological viewpoint should never be allowed to go off into the extreme way-out and whacky, but at the same time there must be enough of a holistic approach to it in order that we, as a people - both Christian and non-Christian, can delve deeper into discovering the amazing diverseity of God our Creator and make informed decisions for ourselves. There would be an outcry of disgust if another religion was held back in any way, or portrayed as going against it's own morals and ethics, yet it seems to be happening with Christianity a lot, and whenever anyone does dare speak out, they are silenced by the courts. Let's not be silent about our God and how good He is. Please, please, take a stand, and make some good noise, about this - taking back the running of your own bookshop would be a fantastic cry of justice and could begin something amazing over the world - if we don't think big, we'll never achieve big.

Rev Dr John WilsonAs a former member of staff and Ushaw College, Durham, I know how important the Cathedral Bookshop is as a resource for theological study and as a support for the work and ministry of local churches. Please do all that is possible to restore and sustain the excellent tradition.

Ian KentBeing a current Cranmer Hall student (and former student president) I used to think of this bookshop as an invaluable resource in my studies. It is with sadness that I see it in its current state. After recent attempts to buy and order books there failed I no longer even go in there. Please give us back our shop!

John RanfordI want The SPCK bookshop to be reinstated as a quality Christian bookshop serving the Christian community and other visitors appropriately.
Mary BartholomewAs a retired SPCK manager, I have ached for my colleagues through these difficult times and pray that the Dean and Chapter will step in and settle this matter once and for all and allow the shop to return to the excellent shop it was before the American brothers came to the UK.

Dr Angus GoudieIt's really sad to see the effect on staff and the number of empty shelves, We have always found the staff there most helpful. It is also such a bad witness when orders xan not be placed because of difficulty for suppliers to have invoices met.
Keith BennettFortunately in Cambridge we do have an alternative Christian bookshop but the way in which the staff and the shop supporters, myself included, were treated at the SPCK bookshop after the 'takeover' was outrageous. I gladly add my name to your petition.
AnonymousI wholeheartedly support this. I fully support the staff of Durham, as I have all the other shops, but the Brewers have no regard for the Booksellers they have dismissed (without notice or compensation) or paid supliers and publishers. Stock is beng moved from shops that have closed to the few remaining without being paid for The staff need your support, please help them
