Save Duquesne Men's Swimming

WHEREAS ... On January 25, 2010, the Administration of Duquesne University

announced plans to end its sponsorship of four varsity teams including men’s

swimming.

WHEREAS ...The Duquesne mission statement asserts that Duquesne serves God by

serving students – through commitment to excellence in liberal and professional

education, through profound concern for moral and spiritual values, through the

maintenance of an ecumenical atmosphere open to diversity, and through service to the

Church, the community, the nation, and the world.

WHEREAS …The men’s swimming team has consistently been successful both

academically and athletically.

We, the undersigned, request:

1. That the Administration open and continue communication with the men’s swim team, alumni

board, and parent association in order to develop a plan to reinstate the swim

team.

2. That the men’s swim team be granted a reprieve of three years to allow time to

establish an endowment that would maintain this program in the future.

3. That the University support the swim team by allowing the use of campus

facilities in their fundraising efforts.

4. That the Board of Trustees define the relationship between the goal of Duquesne

Athletics on campus and the Universities Mission Statement.

Sincerely,

Undersigned,
