We, the undersigned, oppose the proposed scheduling change for the Dunlap School District, which would cause Dunlap High School classes to begin at 7:30 A.M. and end at 1:47 P.M. on Wednesdays and 2:47 P.M. on all other days, for the following reasons: • It would eliminate zero hour, exacerbating the school’s existing issues with ensuring that all students can take their desired classes. • Advanced classes, electives, and the arts would be particularly affected due to restrictions on the number of classes and the primacy of core academic subjects. • The parking and traffic issues currently experienced on the high school campus would be exacerbated. • The change in the school schedule once a week would be disruptive to classes and families. • Part of the rationale given for the change is that students are negatively impacted by the loss of time at the end of the day for extracurricular activities. In reality, only a small minority of students are affected by this at any given time. • If, as is being discussed, music rehearsals are scheduled after school, students will be forced to choose between music and athletics to the detriment of both activities. We move that the proposal be tabled for further discussion and that a number of alternatives be considered to meet the needs of both families and the district, including but not limited to: • No change. The current schedule has caused no severe problems that we are aware of, and is to be preferred to the current proposal. • Addition of more school improvement half-days. • Use of homeroom for teacher meeting time. Sincerely, The Undersigned
