   Comments: We are 'extremely' concerned about the lowering of diagnostic thresholds for multiple disorder categories, about the introduction of disorders that may lead to 'inappropriate medical treatment' of vulnerable populations, and about specific proposals that appear to lack empirical grounding. - As stated at the conclusion of this letter, we believe that it is time for psychiatry and psychology collaboratively to explore the possibility of developing an alternative approach to the conceptualization of emotional distress. < Emotional distress over this issue would no doubt classify the many of us that have signed on to this Petition, as now, being 'Mentally ill'

    Comments: I believe that what occured in my personal situation, following months (2001) of being an excellent caregiver for my husband (a Vietnam Veteran who suffered complex medical issues) is appalling. I was born and raised in this country, was in Scouting as a girl and as an adult, one who ran a migrant program for children as a teenager, a nurse's aide, a substitute teacher, a residential trainer, one who ran a program for Seniors with DD, Counselor, Service Coodinator, Case Manager, in and out of people's homes of various cultures, advocating during IEP meetings in schools, Promoter of Music Therapy having studied it and benefited from music all my life, part of teams engaged in Quality Assurance Reviews of group homes, collaborating w/Dept. of Rehab and Day Program personnel, presenting in Medical Reviews and Core Staff (and much more !!) I had a mother who was a Public Health nurse, a Godfather who was a WWII Vet, a son who is in law enforcement...many military family members...To be MISdiagnosed during bereavement (!) and menopause, to have had my intelligence insulted, Not to have been heard over YEARS out of my life, having lost my career, having had to endure family division caused by the mental UNhealth system that did nothing to promote good communication, no mediation, nothing that would actually meet true NEEDS and only force drugs is even worse. I have compared all I observed to my previous employment experiences in the field of Developmental Disabilities and I have been and shall continue to inform everyone I speak with, how the system of harm (mental UNhealth system) falls very, very short ! I am determined to find a way OUT, onward and UPward ! I am empowered, tired of Not being regarded as who I am ! The lies that so-called professionals document because they are only concerned with themselves and those who are in 'it' for $$$, must stop ! Human Rights and Human Dignity WILL return. The fact that some of our stories have not been shared due to having been told our initial records were destroyed ~~~ well, now, how very convenient for some people. This has been ridiculous and that doesn't even summarize properly.//

    Comments: I have long been concerned about the lack of clear water between the commercial interests of drug companies and the research funding of psychiatry and psychology. I believe that DSM5 will never have the credibility it should have until there is a clear and impenetrable boundary between the interests of these two communities. I also think that DSM has always failed to address the wider community of successful practice,including those approaches which do not patholgise every manifestation of human unhappiness but which offer a more positively framed methodology and belief system.
