   Comments: As a patient advocate for a young adult with long-term illness, I have particular concerns for the DSM-5 proposals for the new Somatic Symptom Disorder category that is proposed to replace four DSM-IV Somatoform Disorders. In the DSM-5 field trials, 15% of the cancer and coronary disease study group met the criteria for diagnosed illness + an additional mental health diagnosis of "Somatic Symptom Disorder." 26% of the "functional somatic" study group (irritable bowel and chronic widespread pain patients) were coded with an additional "SSD" mental heath diagnosis in the field trials. See commentary by Allen Frances, MD, who chaired the Task Force for DSM-IV, at Psychology Today blogs (December 09) for Dr Frances' concerns for the implications for all patient groups of these over-inclusive, highly subjective and potentially damaging SSD criteria.
