Name: Alan Jordan on Nov 19, 2012Affiliation: University of LimerickAre you a mental health professional? : Yes, OtherComments: It is my opinion that many vulnerable people are in the position they are in due to a belief that they are not okay, which they have picked up in their early family life. To put a diagnostic label on such a person, other than as a last resort can be very damaging to the person's vitality in living. I think that to ignore the relational context of an individual is to ignore the person as a human being.Flag

First, where are the empirical findings to support this new definition? Here we go again - new label, no biomarkers, and no validated treatment regimens. Second, this new label will haunt these individuals throughout their lives in the classroom, workplace and beyond. Imagine how teachers and employers will treat these severely ill individuals who will now come with a label of "DISRUPTIVE Mood Dysregulation Disorder"? This label will undoubtedly lead to discriminatory practices and further isolate these individuals and their families.Flag

Name: Patricia Lozano Mendez on Dec 6, 2012Affiliation: I don´t have affiliationAre you a mental health professional? : Yes, a PsychologistComments: I agree with the comments made by colleagues and I believe that the proposal to lower diagnostic thresholds is scientifically premature and has numerous risks. Diagnostic sensitivity is particularly important considering the limitations and side effects of popular antipsychotic medications. Increasing the number of people who qualify for a diagnosis can lead to excessive medicalization and stigmatization of transitive anguish, even downplaying normative sociocultural variation while puts more emphasis on biological theory and this affected vulnerable populationsFlag

Name: Peter H. Van Oot, Ph.D. on Dec 8, 2012Affiliation: JFK UniversityAre you a mental health professional? : Yes, a PsychologistComments: DSMV, by my reading, appears to be a hasty attempt at an upgrade without adequate consideration for the implications of cultural/contextual variation, age variation, and basic health. The lowering of thresholds, in many cases already rather idiosyncratically applied, could have dangerous effects on especially older folks and children if medication use increases as a result. I am pro-medication as appropriate, but the gero and peds fields need considerably more work, and this edition does not reflect much of what we already know that flies in the face of many of the existing diagnostic types.Flag
