Name: Jean Carnochan on Sep 28, 2012Affiliation: StudentAre you a mental health professional? : Yes, a PsychologistComments: I strongly agree with the BPS's concerns regarding DSM-V. In particular I am concerned about the medicalisation and resulting medication of people who may be displaying natural and normal responses to their experiences. Social / interaction models based on theraputic / solution focused approaches are preferable.Flag

Name: David Pickering on Sep 29, 2012Affiliation: APAAre you a mental health professional? : No, I am not a mental health professionalComments: I am frankly repulsed by the way the new DSM is massively increasing the amount of diagnostic categories, as well as shifting to focus more and more on more on "mental illness" as a primarily biologically based, medical-model issue. I am telling all of my friends (as well as hundreds of people on a major online discussion forum about mental illness that I participate in), both those who suffer from mental illness and their family and friends who do not, how negatively I view the DSM and APA which is producing it. For these people, I am outlining all of the common-sense reasons not to buy into this way of thinking, which labels people with so-called disorders which have no scientific basis and then seeks to medicate them with pills which may harm them over the long term. I am making it clear to these people that drug companies stand to massively profit from the continuation of these distortions. I am urging everyone I talk to spread the word to their friends and family that the new DSM is an unscientific, politically-motivated fraud that is not serving the best interests of patients or those who would help them. At the deepest level, I am an enemy of the new DSM and the APA which is producing it. I will continue to actively spread extremely negative information regarding these entities, and encourage others to do the same, indefinitely until such time as the APA modifies the DSM in most of the ways outlined in the letter above. My concern for people who are being hurt by your overfocus on labeling and recommendation of biological-based treatment for interpersonally-created problems, permits me to do no less.Flag

An alternative manual, as suggested by Div 32, using real language, must be developed. And through the President's special funding, the medical model ("mental health") has now infiltrated the schools. How many humans must be misdiagnosed with invented conditions so that others can make money? I'm with Division 32 all the way. Let me know how I can help.Flag

Name: Anonymous on Oct 6, 2012Affiliation: N/AAre you a mental health professional? : No, I am not a mental health professionalComments: The high rates of brain injury complicated by high rates of dr's failure to accurately diagnose brain injury is yet another factor falsely inflating the number of persons 'diagnosed as mentally ill" who are often without question drugged psychotrophic drugs known for 30 years to cause further brain injury. Brain injury survivors must be considered to be the “vulnerable” group they are and protected from psychiatric drug abuse. http://www.democracynow.org/2012/10/5/on_afghan_war_11th_anniversary_vets ...a 2010 joint NPR-ProPublica investigation finding that as many as 40 percent of Fort Carson soldiers had mild brain injuries missed by Army health screenings. On the 11th anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan, we take a look at the invisible wounds of war here at home. Since the war began on Oct. 7, 2001, less than a month after the Sept. 11th attacks, at least 2,000 U.S. soldiers have died. Some 2.4 million U.S. soldiers have served in Afghanistan and Iraq, and the psychological toll of the wars is mounting. Last year, the Veterans Administration treated almost 100,000 Iraq and Afghanistan veterans for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and soldier suicides reached an all-time high this year. In Colorado Springs, the commanders at Fort Carson have come under scrutiny for its handling of mental health concerns, with a 2010 joint NPR-ProPublica investigation finding that as many as 40 percent of Fort Carson soldiers had mild brain injuries missed by Army health screenings. http://tbilaw.com/tbivoices/moodmedicationinterferedwork/ Part Twenty-ThreeBy Attorney Gordon Johnson800-992-9447 Michael’s failure to get proper brain injury care from a psychiatrist is more the rule than the exception. To get a feel for how far behind brain injury science psychiatry is, all one needs to do is look at the still considered a “research” definition that the DSM-IV contains for Post Concussion Syndrome. In the American Psychiatric Associations Manual of Mental Disorders, a loss of consciousness of greater than five minutes is a prerequisite for a finding of PCS. No other definition of brain injury is so flawed, with the consensus throughout the neurological and neuropsychological community for almost 20 years now that no loss of consciousness is required for a diagnosis of brain injury. A lack of involvement by clinicians and learned patients in recovery will be overwhelmed by research and pharmaceutical bias which may be self-serving.Flag
