    Comments: While my training was focused towards research and teaching I have spent time working in clinical settings, in particular emergency psychiatric services. Lowering the bar for some disorders could lead to abuse in terms of involuntary holds or a lack of service due to patients not being deemed as needing treatment which could increase the already existing problem of a revolving door for some patients.

    Comments: As a student I had an opportunity to review and discuss the proposed revisions, changes and additions the DSM in '10 and '11. To say that DSM V is self-serving is understatement. The changes are clearly self-serving for a profession that has evolved into one whose primary treatment modality is making a diagnosis to support prescription drug therapy. Two of my personal favorites are categorizing bereavement as a condition or syndrome requiring psychiatric intervention or treatment and GAD. I look forward to DSM VI, which will not doubt include EGAD (extreme generalized anxiety disorder), and of course DLAS (daily life anxiety syndrome. Sad to see a once respected profession sink so low. Psychiatrists, heal yourselves - and do it with a non-prescribing professional.
