Name: Matt Wright on Nov 13, 2003State: TXCountry: USComments: I am 20 years old and will be 21 in about 4 months, but I still believe that the legal drinking age should be lowered. I believe that if, at the age of 18, you can join the U.S. Military, fight and die for your country, you should be able to go to a bar and have a drink. I understand that Congress or whomever decides these laws may think that people are not mature enough at 18 to handle drinking, but they also must consider that some people that are 21 or older still are not mature enough to handle it. I believe it should be a choice that an individual should be able to make for themselves. Legally, at the age of 18, a person is considered an adult and is subject to legal punishments just the same as someone that is 21 or older. I honestly do not believe that lowering the drinking age to 18 would have a serious effect on society. However, I do believe that if it was lowered then "underaged" people would feel less inclined to drink because one of the main reasons I know from experience as to why people under the age of 21 drink is to simply rebel against the fact that they can't. I am not sure who this petition will reach or what difference it could possibly make, but I stand firm on my beliefs and hope my words may possibly allow people to take a step back and look at the reasons behind the legal drinking age.Flag

Name: Carissa Sestito on Nov 15, 2003State: NJCountry: USComments: The problem with America today is that we inhibit too much (either for the cash cow of getting caught committing these crimes--underage drinking, drug use, paying for sex, partial birth abortion, etc) when we should except them and embrace them. We are a backwards and puritan society, and are well behind the modern thinking of the rest of Western society. This conservatism probably stems from the fact that we have leaders who still cling to their Bibles as they sign their bills into laws. Anyhow, getting to the point, it's a widely known fact that people under the age of 21 years old do drink. Wouldn't it be in the best interest of legislators, especially in these hard economic times, to lower the drinking age The alcohol revenue alone would probably magnify itself by an unspoken percentage, and would prevent crimes (such as theivery and violence in the illegal pursuit of alcohol and rape and other serious felonies and misdemeanors where under 21-ers are drinking in unsupervised settings. Whereas in a bar or club, such actions would less likely to occur, although they do. However, it's just less likely.) Furthermore, it's very difficult to find ANYTHING to do when you're under 21 besides drink illegally or drive around aimlessly looking for something to do. Just tonight, I spent the midnight hour with my friends sliding down the escalator railing in the empty mall because there was NOTHING to do. Most of the time, boredom leads to pursuit of activity, leads to trouble, leads to danger, leads to violence...anyway, thats a one sided model, but the point is that we would spend less time screwing around if we had something to do, like go to a bar for instance. We're too old to hang around at home doing nothing and moping wondering where our lives are going, and we're old enough to go to war and risk our lives, but not old enough to have a beer. It's probably in the best interest of lawmakers to keep the age at 21 lest we lose our precious highway funding. What does NJ need it for anyway God knows they charge every motorist who uses the highway an unspecified amount (depending on the highway) so doesn't that pretty much cover the cost California doesn't even rake in any money from automobiles on the road, so they build theirs on funding. We don't really need it. Anyway, it's not the point. If you embrace any activity that is considered taboo, not only does it make the country safer because now its regulated and protected, but it also puts different views in perspective. Like I said, instead of 18 year olds getting drunk off beer they had some bum buy them after they consented to oral sex, and then driving around aimlessly wreaking havoc, why not justlet them in the bars to drink and play pool and listen to music and whatnot... it's just absurd. I don't understand why we're so backwards. Legalize it, you can get cash, everyone does it. Make prostitution legal--people do it anyway, but it will stop the spread of disease if its regulated by company and government standards I don't get this country sometimes.Flag
