DC’s Health Department is aggressively pushing to instate a mandatory 24-hour waiting period for all individuals looking to get a tattoo in the District.WASHINGTON, D.C.-- (WOFL) -- District of Columbia officials have proposed mandating a 24-hour waiting period before getting a tattoo or a body piercing. A spokeswoman for the Department of Health, Najma Roberts, thinks that the new rules would prevent individuals from making stupid decisions while they are intoxicated. She said, “They can’t be responsible for themselves, as well as the person doing the work on them. We’re making sure when that decision is made that you’re in the right frame of mind, and you don’t wake up in the morning . . . saying, ‘Oh my God, what happened?’” The city's Department of Health proposed 65 pages of regulations for tattoo parlors on Friday. One states that a tattoo artist cannot apply a tattoo until at least 24 hours after a customer requests it. The language for body piercings is similar. Tattooing and piercing were unregulated in the district until last year, when the D.C. Council passed legislation requiring tattoo artists and body piercers to be licensed. The D.C. Health Department is sending this recommendation to the D.C. Council but already some are saying hold on a minute. And it isn't going over so well with those in the business of body art. It's pretty simple, if this recommendation goes through and you walk into a tattoo parlor and say I want this design on my arm or maybe chest, they will have to say can't do it now, you'll have to come back tomorrow. It's time to ask ourselves... what's next? If you don't agree with this, please sign the petition.
