Dr. Eugenie C. Scott, currently director of the National Center for Science Education, is one of the United States\' foremost educators and scientists. In addition to teaching at the University of Colorado and at California State University, Hayward, she has served as President of the American Association of Physical Anthropologists and as Chairperson of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Over the course of her career as an educator and a scientist, Dr. Scott has been honored with the American Society for Cell Biology\'s Bruce Alberts Award, the Geological Society of America\'s Public Service Award, the American Institute of Biological Sciences\' Outstanding Service Award, the Margaret Nicholson Distinguished Service Award from the California Science Teachers Association, the Anthropology in the Media Award from the American Anthropological Association and the National Science Board\'s Public Service Award for "her promotion of public understanding of the importance of science, the scientific method and science education" among a number of other distinctions. Considering the increasing flight of science jobs to our economic competitors overseas, we the undersigned feel that the importance of implementing a sound science education during the next American administration cannot be understated. Therefore, we join this petition in the hope of drafting Dr. Eugenie C. Scott as President Obama\'s choice for the Secretary of Education of the United States of America.
