Born in 1946 in Denekamp, Netherlands, the Honorable Romeo Dallaire has come to represent the very best this country has to offer. A retired military officer, noted author and a champion of human rights, he was appointed to the senate in 2005, representing his home province of Quebec. He serves on the standing committee on human rights as well the standing committee on legal and constitutional affairs. He has received numerous honorary degrees, the Aegis Trust award, the Pearson peace medal and is an officer of the order of Canada. His book “Shake Hands with Devil”, about his experience commanding the UN peacekeeping mission in Rwanda, received the 2004 governor general’s award, and the 2003 Shaughnessy Cohen Award for Political Writing. Regarded by many as a national hero, he was voted 16th on the CBC’s list of “Greatest Canadians” in 2004.
