Stop the death penalty!
In 1998, America executed more people than countries like Iran, Cuba, Rwanda, and even Taliban Afghanistan

This petition is sponsored by Slowdown, a group of Stanford University students dedicated to changing American politics to reflect more humane and gentle values. We are living in fast times--increasingly, those who cannot keep up are being left out. At a time of unprecedented prosperity, while stockmarkets and individual portfolios rush toward prosperity, millions in the United States are more marginalized than ever before. Prosperity breeds blindness: the richer we are, the more comfortable we are, the less likely we are to look around us, to notice the less fortunate. We believe that it is time to slow down and take a look outside our windows.

Over the next couple of months, Slowdown will be hosting a number of i-petitions. Each one will feature a different subject; all will be aimed at improving the situation of America's least privileged. Our aim is to take advantage of election season to influence the platforms of the leading presidential candidates. Accordingly, each petition will be mailed (in electronic format and by snail mail) to the leading candidates of the Republican and Democratic parties, as well as to any viable third party candidates (click here to see a list of candidates that will receive a copy of this petition). Please help influence America's future by signing in the space below. You can also help by informing your friends about this petition. All it takes is a click.

We are a non-partisan, non-commercial organization. Your signatures will only be released to the candidates, and we will not reveal your name or any other information stemming from this petition to anyone else.

To contact us, email deathpen@slowdown.stanford.edu.

I support Slowdown's efforts to stop the death penalty in America. As a leading presidential candidate, you have the power to change the terms of debate on this topic; as a potential president, you will be in a position to effect real change. As an American, I ask you to use your voice and authority to hasten the end of state-sponsored killing.
