London has already wasted a prodigious quantity of money and time on mounting an Olympic bid, and our government has made the offensive assumption that all Londoners wish to host the 2012 Olympics. Our public transport and streets are defaced by promotional material, and we are constantly patronised by public figures who tell us how important it is to back the bid. If the Olympics were to come to London this would entail huge amounts of unnecessary expenditure on facilities which would quickly become useless - why not spend the money on schools or hospitals? Why not spend it on other, needier parts of the country? The only people to benefit from a London Olympics would be those who wish to see the games; let them travel to Paris, a quick train journey away, or take a cheap flight to Madrid. Both these cities are as accessible as London from most of the UK.
This petition will be sent to the International Olympic Committee, and will hopefully help to show them that London does not want the 2012 games. |

This petition was started by Lily Steadman, a liberal Londoner who has until now supported almost everything mayor Ken Livingstone has done for the city. Let's make sure he can't waste our taxes on this colossal mistake. |
