Employer Statement of Support
Montgomery County Domestic Worker Protection Legislation (Bill 2-08)
As an employer of a domestic worker in Montgomery County, Maryland, I am committed to creating a workplace that respects the dignity of my employees, and recognize that:
1. Domestic workers provide services that are central to my life: care for my home and family.
2. County-wide, domestic workers frequently work in excess of 12 hours per day, 6 days per week, without sick leave, predictable work hours, or vacation time.
3. Because domestic workers are frequently immigrant women who work alone, they are at greater risk of being unfairly treated by their employers.
As an employer of a domestic worker in Montgomery County, Maryland, I therefore support, and pledge to honor, legislation to protect domestic workers that would provide:
1. A contract for domestic workers, specifying the work that is to be done, wages, work hours, and clear policies about breaks, as well as provisions for when a worker's employment ends. A sample contract, created by the Montgomery County Commission for Women, will be provided to employers and workers as a model.
2. Basic rights for live-in workers: specifically, a room with a door that locks and access to kitchen and laundry facilities.
3. A way for workers to enforce their rights by reporting violations to the county.
In recognition of the importance of domestic work, and the widespread injustices suffered by domestic workers, I support, and urge my elected county councilmember to vote in favor of, domestic worker protection legislation in Montgomery County (Bill 2-08).
