The petition
At the beginning of this school year, KISD began a pilot program whereby parent traffic is prohibited from the back entrance to Doerre Intermediate. As a result, dropping off and picking up students has become very difficult. As concerned taxpaying parents and residents, we are concerned about the serious safety issues that have developed since the start of this pilot program.
• Emergency vehicles called to the school are instructed to go through the front entrance (the new sign at the front of the school was required by the fire chief so that emergency vehicles know where the school is) – if this happens during the AM or PM drop off times, the emergency vehicles will find that they cannot get in the front entrance and they will have to go to the back entrance. This small delay in time could mean life or death for a student or staff member.
• An unsafe result of the new traffic flow is that parents are dropping off their children in the Kroger parking lot, along Theiss Mail Rt., along Champion Forest, and along the streets near the rear entrance. This means the students are dodging oncoming traffic in their rush to get to school. Students are also being dropped off in other neighborhoods and walking across the school property, and unfortunately there are no sidewalks, crosswalks, or speed limit signs available to them.
• Some children are dropped off much earlier now because of the traffic problem, and there's no supervision until the children are let into the cafeteria at 8:15AM.
• Parents who need to pick up their children a little early from school cannot get into the school parking lot.
• As parents are waiting in line, the students get more and more anxious about being late to school, and that's not the way they should be starting their day.
Our proposed solutions are as follows:
1. Install sidewalks along the three streets around the back entrance, specifically Knurled Oak, Trace Forest, and Silver Shadows. This will ensure the safety of all walkers and bike riders by keeping them out of the road where cars and buses travel.
2. Revert back to the old system, with the exception of when buses arrive and depart. In the AM, allow parent traffic to use the back entrance until the first bus arrives - in the PM allow parent traffic until the first bus departs.
