Comments: The elimination of Chief Illiniwek as the symbol of the U of I is not acceptable. Instead of running him out of town - show some courage and pride in the University's most treasured tradition and bring him back.

Comments: It's a slap in the face to all those who have graduated with the Chief as our universities symbol and it makes our school look like a joke if we try and replace him.

Comments: class of 1980. This silliness has been going on since I was an undergraduate. We are the Fighting Illini and the Chief is our repected icon.No proud graduate of the University of Illinois ever meant to disrespect native Americans in our history. This is just a trumped up misguided effort to kill a cherished tradition of ourmschool and state. Bring back the Chief!

Comments: Chief Illiniwek was a way to keep alive the native american culture which represented central Illinois for centuries. Just because the racists at the NCAA want to eliminate indigenous traditions from our society does not mean that we have to have a two-bit mascot to help us forget. How about this instead at the beginning of every sporting event at U of I: "Now, please pause for a moment of silence to remember the many traditions of the indigenous people who have contributed so much to our rich lifestyle in Illinois. Because of the racist policies of the NCAA we are not able to share them with you today, but please pray for the day that the censorship is lifted and we can again rejoice in the diversity that characterizes the University of Illinois."

Comments: I have benn very disappointed that the Uof I dropped the Chief Illiniwek. I agree with many that having the Chief was NOT a slam but in fact an HONOR. I am a 1973 graduate of the UofI. I have had several friends that were actually the Chief, among them Larry Smith. Look it up!. GO ILLINI.
