In California the Department of Motor Vehicles has the authority to suspend and or issue a temporary license to first time DUI offenders. My petition is to stop this license suspension for first time DUI offenders and or Wet reckless offenders because of the burden that it puts on the families and individuals. If a person is unfortunate to get a DUI and or a Wet Reckless charge they are already facing fines and AA classes and or community service. They should not have to be burden with the difficulties of not being able to drive there vehicle to do there everyday business, like going to work taking kids to Dr's, school etc. Restricting someone's license does not fix the issue it actually creates more problems like loosing there job because now they can't get to work. If someone wants to drive a car while drunk suspending their license will not fix the problem, just as if someone wants to do illegal drugs they can get them if they want to? So my petition will stop this power from the DMV so that people can get on with their lives and continue to be productive. yes it is unfortunate that you received a DUI but everyone's circumstances are different and you cant punish someone for making a mistake as if they are a criminal. you know as well as I do that yes there are some people who have driven drunk and have killed someone or themselves but not everyone has had that same situation happen to them nor do all these people continue to act irresponsible. now if you continue on this path and receive a 2nd DUI then of course continue on with the suspension of license and or restriction, but not for first time offenders.
