The existing swim zone at Hanaka`o`o Beach in Lahaina is inadequate. In December 2012, while swimmng and placing flags on canoe regatta lane poles, William "Uncle Billy" Kalanikai Gonzales was fatally injured by a recreational motorized boat. He was preparing lanes for high school canoe crews practicing for an upcoming Maui Interscholastic League regatta. A veteran official with the MIL league for over ten years, he was also a respected water official with the Maui County Hawaiian Canoe Association and Hawaii Canoe Racing Association for over 25 years. Just 16 months later, his son Hoku Gonzales, while swimming out to place lanes for a canoe club's fundraiser regatta, was faced with a motorized vessel entering the swim zone area approaching him. It took a lifeguard on bull horn and a jet ski to warn the vessel of a swimmer up ahead. Help us get DLNR to expand the swim zone area and put up signage at boat ramps to educate owners and operators about swim areas. Mahalo!
