I think most felons would love the chance to be accepted in society as contributing members, but its hard to do when no one will give you a chance, simply because you are a felon.Flag

Name: Kenneth Roberson on Nov 14, 2006State: TXCountry: USComments: I am a one-time offender who has served his time and simply wants to be given the opportunity to become a functional part of society. I committed a crime and paid a price for my injustice. Now an injustice is being committed upon me and thousands like myself who simply want to live an honest and free life. Society makes it impossible to do this by not offering ex-felons a chance at a job. This leaves us homeless and destitute. This will eventually lead many back to a life of crime. This vicious cycle needs to end, and it will take peeling away the layers of society's comfort zone and having the issues stare them starkly in the face. I 100% promote any advocacy of this petition and its cause.Flag

Name: Anthony Carr on Aug 29, 2007State: OKCountry: USComments: I served a total of 17 years in prison basically due to my addiction to drugs. I stopped using in 1998, was released in 2001 and have achieved an AS and a BBAdm. Too bad no one will hire me because of my past. I wasted money on education just to be rejected at every door inspite of the fact that I was the top 1% in my college, Delta Mu Delta, Cum Laude. Our government needs to enact laws that stop across the board discrimination when the crime does not relate to some security threat to the job.Flag

Name: Euplemia Black on Oct 6, 2007State: WICountry: USComments: Ex-felons have paid their debt to society by being imprisoned for the term of their sentence must they also pay the price when they come out no one is perfect and people do make mistakes not making excuses for ex-felons but society does not know what the reasoning is behind the ex-felons background only what you see on his record so yes when they come back into society they have a right just like everyone else to the same opportunities as we do so get over it and lets keep it movingFlag

Name: Anonymous on Oct 30, 2007State: NCCountry: USComments: I agree with everything except full disclosure. To require such disclosure provides the opportunity for the landlord/employer to pretend that the refusal to employ or rent is for other purposes. What you propose becomes pointless with this clause in there. Think about it. There is already laws like this without the clause. It still doesn't matter.Flag

Name: Carrie Reichert on Nov 1, 2007State: MICountry: USComments: in america we are all suppose to be treated equally. How is a person with a felony suppose to turn their life around and better themselves if employers won't hire them because of the felony thats why criminals remain criminals, its the only way they have to earn money, because no one hires them. why most they pay their whole life for a crime that they did time for probably did when they were young and stupid.Flag

Name: Cindy Spadola on Nov 2, 2007State: NJCountry:Comments: It is a shame that a country that has fought for equal rights and has made mistakes of their own treat felons with no regard. I know first handed how the after effects( white collar crime) basically can destroy the ability for a family to survive. Not being able to work, pay bills, and no medical benefits is frightening. IT is amazing how people come into this country with no background checks and receive all the benefits they need. The goverment needs to re-examine their own system before passing such harsh punishement. Once you are labled a felon your reputation and work standards are worthless.Flag

Name: Anonymous on Nov 6, 2007State: AKCountry:Comments: I firmly believe that ex-felons are dicriminated against for things that any sensible person would agree with. Job opportunities should be available to those capable of filling those required fields regardless of criminal history. I believe that a company could be made aware of one's criminal past, but I DO NOT believe that a job opportunity should be based on one's criminal history. It should be held in the same regards as race, sex, age, or religion for discrimination. Give these people a chance. They've paid thier debts through imprisonment and other forms of punishment. Don't label them for LIFE.Flag

Before they sat down, the interviewer said he could not be hired because of his felony record from 6 yrs ago. He said it was overlooked on the application or they wouldn't have called him. Funny thing is, it was the second WalMart to call him but the first wasn't upfront with the reason for not getting hired; they just didn't call him back after the interview.Flag
