I do not remember exactly when, but some time ago Sky decided that they wanted to start showing 12, 15 and PG-rated movies during the day-time. OFCOM agreed to this if Sky implemented a PIN protection system as follows: Cert 12 films need a PIN before 8pm Cert 15 films need a PIN before 9pm Cert 18 films need a PIN before 10pm Whilst I do agree in principle with the idea, I believe the implementation is a little too restrictive in that no provision was made to turn it off in situations where such protection was not necessary; such as environments where children are not present. For example, I am a single person, living on my own with no children at all, whatsoever. By this I mean that no child has ever set foot in my home. Therefore, while there is no need to PIN protect any TV in this house, I cannot switch off this 'feature', rendering the recording of any films whilst I am out of the house completely useless. Of course, Sky and Virgin Media both have Digital Video Recorders that can handle these PIN-protected movies by (I assume) recording them and asking for the PIN before you can watch them. However, I do not see why I should have to go to extra expense for one when I have a perfectly good, platform-independent DVR - Tivo -here And, of course, I am sure some people still have the old type of VCRs as well. This topic does come up from time to time on the internet forums and usenet groups I frequent, so I know I am not the only one with this problem. I have already written to OFCOM about this and I suggest you do the same. However, please also sign this petition, which I will tell OFCOM about in the future. Hopefully this will make them change the system so that those of us who do not need protecting will be able to disable the system. Thank-you for your time.
