The Australian federal government has released a draft of the newly written National Curriculum for Technologies through ACARA (the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority). "Digital Technologies" curriculum for kindergarten up to Year 10. The National Computer Science School has been advocating for the introduction of computer science concepts earlier in schools, and we are very pleased to see the inclusion of these concepts and skills as far down as Year 3-4. For instance, in Year 3-4, the curriculum draft currently requires *all* Australian kids to learn to "Design and implement simple visual programs with user input and branching" and "Define simple problems, and follow and describe the algorithms (sequence of steps and decisions) needed to solve them. By Year 7-8, the draft mandates that all Australian kids will learn a general purpose programming language and "Trace algorithms to predict output for a given input and to identify errors, and describe algorithms diagrammatically and in plain English". If these changes get through, it will be a massive upheaval for primary and secondary school teachers, with immense benefits for our education system and the future of Australia's children. We need your voice to give feedback to ACARA that Australian kids deserve the changes being proposed!
