THIS PETITION ASKS FOR SUPPORT FOR MEN TO HAVE EQUAL RIGHTS IN THE MATTER OF REPRODUCTIVE CHOICE AND FAMILY RIGHTS.
We all feel sorry for parents whose spouse has abandoned them and left them without the means to bring up their children. This is an injustice we all know about.
There is another injustice less publicised.
In the past week I have spoken to :
A man who has been accused by a former casual girlfriend of being the father of her 15 year old son, who he had always known as the child of her next boyfriend.
A man whose girlfriend told him she was on the pill, then got pregnant and left him for another man as soon as the pregnancy was confirmed.
A man whose wife got pregnant and immediately filed for divorce, in spite of the fact that he wanted the child, in order to get maintenance.
A man whose girlfriend told him she had had an abortion, then filed for maintenance two years after they had split up, knowing he was not aware of the child’s existence.
A man who cannot afford to have children with his new wife as he is paying so much for the children he had with his first wife, who left him and took them.
This is a small selection of cases – there are many more, and probably worse ones, out there. In all of these cases, the CSA is hounding the man for payment, and they are upheld by the law.
People are fond of throwing around the expression “deadbeat dad”. They do not choose to think about what makes a father. In most of the above cases, the man has never, and will probably never meet, this child. In a couple, he was not even aware of its existence. He was merely used to aid conception.
Women have the right to abortion. Where are men’s reproductive rights? If a woman can terminate a foetus, surely a man can opt out of fatherhood if this is something that has been forced upon him.
And where his wife has left him and taken the children, surely he has the right to see them if he wishes? And surely he has the right to afford to make a new start and have a new family, as his ex-wife can do?
As a woman, I am horrified to think that men have no rights in these matters. How can we uphold equal and honest relationships when the law allows us such an unfair advantage where parenthood is concerned.
I PETITION THAT THE LAW NEEDS TO BE CHANGED TO MAKE IT COMPATIBLE WITH THE HUMAN RIGHTS ACT.
This petition asks that the law be changed to reflect the following:
1. A woman must make the father of her foetus aware that he is the father before the child is born, if she wishes to claim maintenance.
2. A father should have the right to “opt out” of fatherhood.
3. If the father does take responsibility for that child, then he should have equal rights and responsibilities to the mother, both financial and emotional.
While many people will find this as shocking as the Abortion Act was found back in 1967, I submit that it is merely a request for equal rights.
There are too many women out there who see pregnancy as an easy way to a meal ticket. They do not take into account the emotional damage to the man involved, or to a child who must then grow up without a father. It is not right that the law should be used as a weapon to trap and coerce people.
If a woman lies in order to become pregnant, she should not be able to benefit from her dishonesty. This change in the law would do no harm to women who are open and honest when wishing to have a child with their partner. What it would do is reduce the number of children who are born with the disadvantage of growing up without a father, because it would deter women who only get pregnant for financial gain. There are a lot more out there than you think.
Please give us your support to ensure a fairer, more equal system and the promotion of loving, two-parent families and happy, well-adjusted children. I will be sending this petition to the Prime Minister and the Secretary of State. |
