Elles ont atteint un niveau alarmant avec l’arrestation, en octobre 2011, de la professeure et politiste Büşra Ersanlı de l’université de Marmara, du directeur des prestigieuses éditions Belge Ragıp Zarakolu, du doctorant en science politique, éditeur et traducteur Deniz Zarakolu, ou de l’étudiante en science politique de 21 ans Büşra Beste Önder. http://www.economist.com/node/21540313Even as Turkey preaches human rights to neighbours, its record at home is patchyNov 26th 2011 | ANKARA | from the print editionWITH her intense gaze, washed-out jeans and talk of freedom, Dilsat Aktas is a typical left-wing activist. In May the 29-year-old climbed onto an armoured police-carrier in Ankara to protest against the death of another activist, who had suffered a stroke after being sprayed with pepper gas in the Black Sea province of Hopa. Ms Aktas now hobbles around on crutches: the police clubbed her so hard as she tried to escape that they broke her left hip. “The doctor says it will take three years to fix,” she says, dragging on a cigarette. Her complaints to a local prosecutor were ignored. Omur Cagdas Ersoy, a fellow student, tried to shield her with his body, only to be flogged in his turn. Mr Ersoy is now in an Ankara jail, along with 15 fellow students, facing charges of belonging to an obscure left-wing armed...

Turkey: Ragip ZarakoluProfessional BackgroundThe director and owner of Belge Publishing House, Ragip Zarakolu has been subject to a lifetime of harassment from the Turkish authorities. After graduating college in 1968, Zarakolu began writing for magazines such as Ant and Yeni Ufuklar, both of which focused on issues of social justice in Turkey. In 1971, a military government assumed power in Turkey and instituted a crackdown on writers it deemed subversive. Following a conviction and a three-year stay in prison, Zarakolu steadfastly refused to abandon his campaign for freedom of thought, striving for an "attitude of respect for different thoughts and cultures to become widespread in Turkey." Since his writings were repeatedly banned in Turkey for their criticism of the country's military regime, Zarakolu began to turn his attention to abuses of human rights by governments in South America and elsewhere. In 1977, Zarakolu and his wife Ayse Nur founded the Belge...

The arrests are part of a crackdown on people engaged in legal political activity with the pro-Kurdish Peace and Democracy Party. Ragip Zarakolu, the publisher, and Büşra Ersanlı, the professor, are among 50 people who have been arrested in Istanbul since October 27. Three were released by...
http://scholarsatrisk.nyu.edu/Events-News/Article-Detail.php?art_uid=3197Scholars at Risk is gravely concerned about reports that Professor Büşra Ersanlı, a professor of political science at Marmara University in Istanbul, has been arrested. SAR asks for letters, faxes and emails urging the appropriate authorities to intervene in Professor Ersanlı’s case and to ensure that it proceeds in a manner consistent with Turkey’s obligations under domestic and international law, in particular internationally recognized standards of due process, fair trial, free expression and freedom of association; to ensure her well being in custody, including access to counsel and family; and to ensure reasonable opportunity for release on bail or bond pending the resolution of the proceedings, as SAR understands Professor Ersanlı has not been accused of violence and poses no threat of violence warranting pre-trial detention. Scholars at Risk (SAR) is an international network of over 270...
