Name: Elmar Chakhtakhtinski on Jul 9, 2009Comments: This is a despicable attack on basic human rights of leading youth activists. Azerbaijani government is solely responsible and needs to account for creating such an environment where political opponents are subjected to such shameful crimes and abuse by authorities.Flag

Name: Mehriban Afandiyeva on Jul 9, 2009Comments: Dear ___, We note with great regret that in some parts of the world today, severe injustices against the driving force for the progress - the socially active youth – takes place in the most brutal manner. This letter is a call for your help. As you read this letter, the fate of two young Azerbaijani activists is being decided. Yesterday the youth movement of Azerbaijan, and the international activist youth as a whole, has suffered an enormous blow. Leaders of “AN” and “OL” youth networks, Adnan Hajizada and Emin Milli (Abdullayev), who have been actively promoting principles of individual liberty and democratization, education, social networking, non-violence and tolerance, were severely beaten by two men in civilian clothes in a broad daylight while dining in a restaurant in the center of the country’s capital- Baku. As they sat in the restaurant, two men approached them asking “why do you criticize the government” Without receiving an answer, one of the questioners hit Emin in the head and then attacked Adnan. After the fight, friends of Adnan and Emin were able to lead them outside the restaurant and headed to a police station to file a report on the attack. However, after going to the hospital due to their injuries and promptly returning to the police station, they were detained as “suspects” for 48 hours. In less than 24 hours, Emin and Adnan were charged with “hooliganism”. The official statement of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Azerbaijan states that Emin and Adnan actually attacked the two men in sports clothes in the restaurant and then headed to the police station. Obviously, this official explanation does not make any sense, since it suggests that Adnan and Emin went to the police department after they attacked the other two men to file a report on their own attack. All of the eyewitnesses assert that Adnan and Emin were the victims of an unprovoked physical assault. Despite persistent requests, Adnan and Emin were refused access to an attorney. A closed trial is scheduled in Sabail District Court tomorrow on July 10th 2009. The fabricated allegations against these youth activists are nonsense, but could cost them their freedom. Meanwhile, international NGOs and human rights centers that are active in Azerbaijan have reacted quickly to these news and made statements criticizing the unjust actions against Adnan and Emin. Norwegian embassy made an official statement, stating their hope that the youth activists will be released and an investigation will be started against those who actually committed this crime against them. Representatives from US, French, German, Swiss and Norwegian Embassy were present at the press conference regarding these unfortunate events. Please contribute to the best of your ability to bringing attention to this despicable injustice perpetrated against those who still carry the light of liberty in Azerbaijan. We urge you to raise public awareness about the assault against these youth activists and join others in exerting international pressure on Azerbaijani authorities to release Emin Milli and Adnan Hajizada and bring their attackers to justice.Flag
