Petition to support subsidised mandatory desexing.

TARGET
10,000 Signatures

Attention: The Hon Kerry Hickey MP, Minister for Local Government

I, the undersigned, support CatRescue’s campaign to introduce mandatory cat desexing. I urge you, the Minister for Local Government to introduce amendments to the Companion Animals act requiring all companion animals not registered for breeding, be desexed.

We urge you to put in place programs to help subsidise the high cost of desexing. Every animal desexed potentially saves the government hundreds of dollars in animal management.

Compulsory desexing would benefit:

Local Government, by reducing the ongoing costs of trapping, management, storage and euthanasia of thousands of animals every year.

Cat Welfare,  Every year thousands of unwanted animals are born. Many of these become stray and live in poor health. Compulsory desexing would reduce this number of unwanted animals.

The Environment, Stray cats often become wild which can impact wildlife and the environment. Compulsory cat desexing would impact the number of cats that become wild.

The Community, Undesexed cats often colonise around community areas, litters can grow exponentially and cause health and community issues. Compulsory cat desexing would reduce stray cat populations and remedy this problem.

Every year over 100,000 animals are euthanased in pounds and shelters across Australia. Many of these animals come from unwanted litters born to undesexed pets. Rescue groups and shelters can only do so much and without effective legislation this will be a never ending problem.

In early October breeding season will be upon us, and pounds and shelters will be teeming with homeless, abandoned and orphaned kittens and puppies. Despite incredible efforts, only a small percentage will be saved from being put to death.

Infant animals make up the highest proportion of animals killed in pounds and shelters. A lack of homes combined with the sudden influx of kittens, and the holiday season makes this time of year a tragedy for both animals and the community.

Catrescue.com.au is working to end this ongoing tragedy. We believe it is necessary for the desexing of companion animals to become compulsory.

Say no to Animals in Pet Shops: The practice of selling animals from pet shops promotes impulse buying and irresponsible breeding for profit. Please help us to stop it. We already have far too many dogs and cats without homes.
