INCLUSION OF VEGETARIAN AND VEGAN DIET IN KINDERGARTENS AND SCHOOLS AND IN OFFICIAL FOOD PYRAMID
We are convinced that it is necessary for the citizens to have the right to health and quality life. In that sense we believe that it is needed to introduce vegetarian and vegan nutrition, as officially recognized and proven healthy diet options.
Serious scientific institutions, based on numerous studies, concluded that vegetarian diet is suitable to all ages. I will cite the scientific conclusion of the "American Dietetic Association" and "Dietitians of Canada." These two associations have announced a rich dossier on the most scientific opinion towards the vegetarian diet, in 2003, "Magazine of the American Society for Nutrition." It reads:
"Well planned vegan and other types of vegetarian diets are suitable in all phases of the life cycle - including pregnancy, breastfeeding, early childhood and adolescence. Vegetarian diet provides a range of health benefits, including lower levels of saturated fat, cholesterol and animal protein, but higher level of carbohydrates, fiber, magnesium, potassium, folate and antioxidants such as vitamin C and E and phitochemicals. Vegetarians, according to research, have lower body mass index than non-vegetarians, as well as lower levels of deaths from ischemic heart diseases; vegetarians also show lower levels of holesterol, lower blood pressure and lower level of high blood pressure, lower prevalence of diabetes (type 2), as well as prostate cancer and colon cancer.

We believe that these recommendations on possible ways to healthier diet should be part of official policies related to nutrition in kindergartens and schools (that children and their parents can choose vegetarian and vegan menu), as well as in other social institutions.
