| 5 | Anna Hobson | I want to make sure
that you are aware of the importance of the issues addressed by
Candy Broad's Private Member's Bill which I understand is going before
Parliament shortly.
I believe it is imperative that the crime of abortion be abolished in order
to protect women and the medical professionals who seek to help them.
Maintaining abortion as a crime is a major fetter on women's independence
and right to bodily autonomy - a right which men enjoy without fetter.
I ask you to vote for this historic bill and to ensure the campaign to
split the vote on the abortion issue is unsuccessful. There is an
alternative bill circulating which seeks to remove abortion from the Crimes
Act, but to make it a crime in the Health Act. This will only serve to
futher undermine a woman's right to choose, by placing greater scrutiny and
mandatory reporting standards on abortions conducted by health
professionals.

| 34 | Elizabeth Jakob | Abortion is still in essence written into the law as a crime. As it stands, women do not have the final say. It is the GP who has been left to interpret amendments to the law and who therefore ultimately decides. Such an unsatisfactory legal basis by which the abortion option is made available fails to protect and respect a woman's right to decide over matters pertaining to her own body. Decriminalising abortion places the decision-making power firmly into the hands of women. |

| 41 | Lorie Werner | women have the capacity to make their own decision in consultation with their Doctor regarding termination of pregnancy. To have the issue of abortion listed in the Crimes Act is an insult to women because it implies that women are helpless little things that must be protected from themselves. |
