A Declaration of Fairness

The petition

Chairman Howard Dean:

One person, one vote is a bedrock principle of our country and our party and counting the votes of the nearly 2.5 million people who participated in the Florida and Michigan primaries is vital to upholding that principle.

Whereas, the Democrats cannot afford to disenfranchise the voters of two states – Michigan and Florida – that are critical to the upcoming presidential election; and

Whereas, Michigan and Florida Democrats overwhelmingly want their primaries to count and significant numbers have said they would be less likely to support the ultimate Democratic nominee if their state delegates and popular vote don't count; and

Whereas, there can be no dispute that there was a level playing field in Florida for the primary and that all candidates had the opportunity to keep their names on the ballot in Michigan; and

Whereas, more than an unprecedented 1.7 million Democrats in Florida and more than 600,000 Democrats in Michigan cast their votes and deserve to be counted; and

Whereas, the Obama campaign is the one standing in the way of a new primary in Michigan and Florida; and

Whereas, the Obama campaign is seeking to deny the Democrats of Florida and Michigan the opportunity to seat their delegates and to have their popular vote recognized; and

Whereas, nearly twice as many people voted in Michigan and Florida than voted in the four early states combined;

Now, Therefore Be It Resolved that we the undersigned, based on the Democratic National Committee’s decision not to recognize the results of the Florida and Michigan primaries, and as concerned Democrats, including many leaders and financial supporters of the Democratic Party, are requesting that both delegations from Florida and Michigan be reinstated immediately as per their respective primary results and that the popular vote in each state be recognized for the DNC.

Be It Further Resolved that the delegates and popular vote should be awarded accordingly. If they are not reinstated by early April, we ask the Democratic National Committee to show cause why they should not be reinstated and establish a mandate for two full revote primaries for June.
