Hi DECD contract teachers. We are creating a petition relating to a policy which has been in place for over 30 years. We need your signature.
We are fighting for better rights for CONTRACT teachers in AUSTRALIA. It relates more specifically to broken non full year contracts, but we understand some of these issues are also common for full year contracts.
-we are not incuring long service leave until 7 years of full time service, if we don't have a full year contract or are TRT
-if our contract is not put through at the start of the year we dont get paid for holidays. (We are meant to be paid loading which is meant to equal us out but doesn't take into account long service leave)
-apparently the union fought for this as we then have the right to seek employment over holidays, however it is hard to gain very short term employment.
-apparently if you are full year contracted you have to seek permission to work in holidays from the department and it is denied as it is detrimental for employees.
- we are saying then why isn't the case for all contract teachers, is working over summer and planning unpaid not also detrimental?
- it is becoming harder for contract teachers to gain permanancy due to the tenure being removed, meaning teachers are staying in the same school
-It is horrible not knowing what is happening and if you will have a job or not to pay the mortgage and bills every year! Permanency is extremely hard to receive at the moment, which is very unfair!!! Something has to be done to keep the good teachers in schools.
