To The Honorable congresswoman Sue Myrick 6525 Morrison Blvd. Suite 100 Charlotte, NC 28211 Dear Representative On behalf of the Indian-American community of Charlotte, we would like to express our deep concern on the impasse in government on the issue of raising the debt ceiling. This is a critical situation which can be potentially dangerous for the economic health of our country. At a juncture when we are already struggling to recover from the most severe recession since the Great Depression, attempts to play politics out of a sense of ideological dogmatism are nothing short of a veritable game of Russian roulette. We appeal to our elected representatives that they recognize the immense flexibility that President has displayed in trying to come to a bipartisan consensus on reducing the budget deficit. The President has placed this consensus-building ahead of narrow, short-term political goals even at the risk of alienating a large portion of his core support base. We would like to see the legislative branch display a similar commitment to the well-being of our country. We expect our government officials to recognize the qualitative difference between the politics of movement-building which by definition needs to be principled and the politics of governing which by definition needs to be cognizant of a broader reality consisting of complex and varied situations that often demand tactical and strategic flexibility. The art of protest enjoys unencumbered freedom whereas the craft of governance should never ignore its burden of functionality. In the last couple of days encouraging signs of bipartisan agreement have emerged from Washington. We appeal to you that no effort be spared to bring this process to a successful conclusion for the sake of all the American people.
