Debra had a request with the NYS Compensation Board to receive a nerve block procedure for an old back injury she incurred while employed several years ago at a grocery store. Debra has had several back surgeries done to try and improve her deteriorating condition, including but not limited to, disc fusion surgery. The last surgery she attempted to get, resulted in anaphylactic shock due to a newly developed allergy to a Penicillin treatment they gave prior to surgery. She nearly died. Within the last year, she has been seeing a pain management specialist associated with Martha Jefferson Hospital, located in Charlottesville, VA, by the name of Dr. Mark Dean. He suggested a nerve block procedure be done in order to minimize the pain she has in her back, neck and legs resulting from her injury. They did an anesthetic procedure where they numbed the nerves they felt were the main cause of her chronic pain and discomfort. The results of the test procedure were amazing. My mother was walking, cheerful, full of energy she hadn’t had in years. It was so exciting for our family to see her that way. For some reason, since that last test procedure, she has not been able to receive any more testing procedures or the nerve block procedure due to a glitch somewhere in the compensation system. Debra cannot get approval, hasn’t received phone calls back and sits waiting by the phone to hear whether this will be able to happen or not. Now we hear from the NYS Worker's Compensation Board that her claim was denied. I can’t tell you enough how important it is that she has this procedure done. She is a new grandmother and is also a foster parent to two children, one being a 3 year old. She is deteriorating by the day and is often unable to walk at all. It is very sad to watch, because my mother is so full of spirit, but cannot compensate her spirit with her lack of mobility. Please help sign the petition to get her procedure approved.
