Ohio has wasted millions of dollars on capital punishment, but we understand it doesn't work as we expected. With the economy in the state that it is in, this type of spending is no longer affordable or wise. An upcoming death penalty trial in Ohio will cost three to four times more than the cost of a life-without-parole trial, according to the trial judge. The death penalty trial for Hector Alvarenga Retana, scheduled to begin on October 31, is expected to cost Butler County an estimated $250,000, according to the judge, not counting the cost of appeals.Money from this cases could be better used to fund schools and support the job market. Furthermore, inmates rarely see execution as it takes more than 10 years for an inmate to be killed after being sentenced. At this point in time the death penalty has become a costly and unaffordable endeavor. State Legislature Bill 160, which as you know proposes repealing the death penalty in favor of life without parole sentences, would save the state money it desperately needs. Please, support fair Justice System and saving money for your state.
