This is now illegal working hours in europe including the UK. If the state government cannot get their budget together to employ the right amount of doctors to do the job - then the federal government should take over.Flag

Name: Tim Harraway on Sep 6, 2009Comments: I commonly see junior colleagues who are extremely fatigued working inhuman hours to the detriment of their patients. I did the same thing as an RMO and a registrar. No other professional group would tolerate this. It is a sad indictment of our profession and our system that we allow this to persist. Any system which supports this practice is inherently flawed.Flag

Name: Anonymous on Sep 6, 2009Comments: I have seen this repeatedly occur with general surgical registrars in NSW who are working "on-call" shifts that are simply absurd! I hope the QLD government listens and steps up to the plate and delivers on what is simply, "in the patients best interests" and is promoting best practice!Flag

Name: Anonymous on Sep 6, 2009Comments: Qld Health killed my husband (aged 36) due to lack of care and lack of staff. It must affect the doctors personally when they have to live with these mistakes. I put sole and total responsibility for my husbands death at the door of the hopsital administrators and Qld Health who are not providing the necessary support staff to help the doctors. Most doctors do there medical degrees because they want to help people. To be killing them and putting them in danger must be against everything they stand for. Anna Bligh, wake up and see what a discgrace your hospital system is - people cannot function with no sleep so how do you expect doctors to perform miracles when they are dead tired!Flag
