This is despite the continual lament, every election, that great swathes of the electorate are either so disaffected that they do not even register to vote, let alone visit a polling stattion to cast theirs, or that the ultimate result fails to adequately represent the views of those who do. We. Need. Progress. In the 21st century UK democracy has become something of a joke amongst our Western peers. I have little doubt that a poll of the political views of a representative sample of all eligible voters would produce something profoundly different to the current structure of the Houses of Parliament. Well, those sections of them which are pseudo-democratically elected, of course.Flag

Name: Adrian L Romilly on Mar 20, 2011Country of residence or citizenship (must be UK or part of it): United KingdomYour comment (will be displayed): We have parliamentary government in the UK- what we need is democracy. It is intolerable that, in a country whose leaders constantly boast about its democratic credentials, governmental decisions (both local and national) that are opposed by the majority of the electorate are nevertheless implemented and the electorate is presented with a fait-accompli; implicitly, the government says to the electorate 'whether you wanted it or not, we've done it anyway - now, what are you going to do about it? Swiss style direct democracy is the remedy- it leaves the last word on any issue with public instead of the political class. The remedy is well known to the politicians and is about as welcome to them as brimstone and treacle was to the boys in a Dickensian workhouse. Adrian L Romilly PS: it w'd be useful if provision were made to copy the submision to one's MP; no reason why he sh'dn't know the views of one of his electors..Flag

Name: Derek Lane on May 11, 2011Country of residence or citizenship (must be UK or part of it): United KingdomYour comment (will be displayed): Direct democracy is essential, from a local level to a state level, in ensuring that the people of any given country have the power to change and affect their own affairs. As it stands, we are controlled by a small number of plutocrats, which means that the majority of the population has no serious say at all in how the country (or their county, or their town or village) is run. Representative democracy is not democracy at all when the choices between leaders are only perceived choices. We can change this in a stroke with the introduction of direct democracy.Flag
