Taxation without representation. You see it on bumper stickers and on every DC license plate. It was the battle cry of our Founding Fathers in overthrowing the oppression of unjust British rule. Yet it is just as relevant a problem today in the District of Columbia, for the members of our own community here at Georgetown, as it was for the rebellious colonists two centuries ago.
Over the last three years, thousands of Americans have died fighting so that Iraqi citizens can achieve the right to vote. Citizens of all states as well as the District of Columbia have risked their lives in support of democracy at home and abroad. Bush’s foreign policy now focuses on democratic liberation, marking a shift towards bringing democracy to “outposts of tyranny.” As our peers die so that foreigners may have the rights of democratic representation that we are so fortunate to enjoy in America, we must turn our efforts toward the egregious tyranny that is the disenfranchisement of DC residents.
DC has one non-voting delegate in the House of Representatives and is deprived of any representation in the Senate. The United States is the only democratic country in the world to deny residents of its capital city equal voting rights in the national legislative body. Despite the fact that DC residents have fought and died in every war America has fought, they lack the voice in the Senate to either support or dissent against such monumental decisions.
We, the undersigned, believe that the residents of the District of Columbia, as full and equal American ctiziens, must be granted full representation in Congress. |
