The petition

We need your action NOW as Congress prepares to decide on the future of the SCHIP program.

In 1997, DC expanded Medicaid to include children up to 200% of the federal poverty level (A family of four earning $41,300 a year). As a result, the District has enrolled nearly 18,000 children in SCHIP over the past 10 years.

In June 2007, the District expanded its Medicaid program to include children up to 300% of FPL, which extends health coverage to an additional 2,000 children, covering nearly 7,100 children.

Congress is reauthorizing the SCHIP program this week (July 30) and may dramatically reduce federal funding.
* The President's proposed budget for SCHIP will drastically reduce enrollment numbers, particularly those recently enrolled as a result of the expansion of health coverage to 300% of poverty.
* Federal dollars may no longer cover these children if SCHIP isn't reauthorized with an appropriate amount of funding.

If the President gets his way, thousands of DC kids could be without health insurance.

Time is of the essence so PLEASE SIGN THIS PETITION BY AUGUST 1 so we can share our views with Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton and President Bush about supporting health coverage for the District's children.
