We the undersigned request the New York City Council, the Mayor Of the City of New York the Honorable Michael R. Bloomberg, and all authorities who have jurisdiction over these matters, to consider renaming (or adding a nominal street-sign) a street after the Scottish-enlightenment philosopher David Hume. _________________________________ Honorable members of The Council, Mr. Mayor, there is no coincidence that a statue of our 16th President, Abraham Lincoln, stands not far from Hume's grave in Edinburgh. Just as Lincoln led the fight to emancipate slaves from the Confederacy, Hume led the philosophical battle against irrationality imposed by Church authorities. In a time where free-thought was a revolutionary act within itself, Hume brought hope to thousands. We believe he deserves the honor to have his name enshrined on a street in the Greatest City in the World.
