The inflammatory rhetoric has stopped and the editorial direction is finally shifting. Seeing this change happen feels like a massive relief for my family and our community. Thank you for staying with me through this long fight.
OPEN LETTER
To Richard Desmond, owner, and Dawn Neeson, editor, The Daily Star
Dear Sir and Madam,
In the past month you have published a series of highly inflammatory stories about Muslims, including:
• 'BBC puts Muslims above YOU' (Oct 16)
• 'Killjoys ban white Xmas' (Nov 3)
• 'Poppies banned in terror hotspots: Muslim snub to forces' (Nov 6)
• 'Vile hate preacher insults our poppies' (Nov 7)
• 'Muslim nutters still preaching hate on our streets' (Nov 11)
These headlines and the stories that go with them twist flimsy and misleading "evidence" to pander to ignorance and prejudice against Muslims.
They do not inform Daily Star readers – on the contrary, they encourage racist stereotyping and contempt.
Your "facts" are highly selective, you make little attempt to give context or comparisons, and you publish no opposing views. Your own staff have protested at the pressure you place on
them to run such stories.
We appeal to you to stop publishing misinformation and distortions. We ask you to respect the right of your staff to decline to work on material they believe breaks the NUJ Code of Conduct.
We invite you to publicly debate your coverage of Muslims with an NUJ official and representatives of the Muslim community.
Seeing this grow makes me think of the real harm these headlines have caused my family and friends. We are nearly at the next milestone so please take a moment to send this link to someone who believes in honest reporting.

I have been hearing from some of your reporters who are deeply uncomfortable with the editorial direction of the paper. This pressure to publish inflammatory content takes a real toll on the people who have to write it and the community members they target.
