Name: Elizabeth Lake on Oct 28, 2002Comments: The constant problems have affected my job at CERG, and also my school work. I am most affected when I can't search the library's website, which is crucial to my studies. It is unfair to have more problems along with an new technology fee. Where is my $150 a year goingFlag

Name: Paula Fekete on Oct 28, 2002Comments: Network performance is not satisfactory. Connection has been so slow that work on the internet was impossible while in the GC. Also the e-mail system needs a filter, because the most discusting junk e-mail is continuously sent to my account on a daily basis.Flag

Name: Kee Yong on Oct 28, 2002Comments: I completely agree with the above letter. Personally I have lost count on the number of times I need to visit the IR consultants located on the lower level of our library for the same problems that seemed to occur every two or three weeks. It is also a scarry thought that a big chunk, if not mostly all of our newly institutionalized "Technology fee" of 75 dollars per full time student will be allocated for the IR department. That is roughly 300.000 per semester every semester. A scarry thought indeed considering how badly this department has been. The sentence "lack of accountability" comes up everytime I think of it.Flag

What is going on I am moreover forced to access my email through the internet because I cannot access it directly through outlook express. Mind explaining that as well never had these problems in the past.Flag

Name: Annelies Kamran on Oct 28, 2002Comments: Since coming to the GC, I have had to deal with all of the above problems, and two that weren't even mentioned -- inability to download information from ICPSR (we are a consortium member), and outdated site licenses for a needed software program (SPSS). I also had my user profile fail when I was trying to sign on for a midterm.Flag

The problems with and unreliability of the network and Information Resources as a department must be dealth with. Although I have found a number of the IR staff to be very helpful, the network and structures limit them incredibly.Flag

Name: Georgia Tsouvala Yoranidis on Oct 28, 2002Comments: After repeatedly trying to maintain an e-mail address through the GC, and being unsuccessful in maintaining a profile that the GC network system would recognise on a regular basis, I have given up. I now have to pay a monthly AOL fee in addition to the student fee, for which I receive very little. This is unacceptable, and I am glad that we can finally voice our frustrations with the IS at the Graduate Center.Flag

Name: Kevin Rafter on Oct 28, 2002Comments: I would like to see #4 moved up to #1, with an oversight committee that IR is accountable to. Also, if we don't see progress by the end of the spring semester, a new VP of IR or a custodial arrangement. The abilities of the current management are highly suspect.Flag

Name: Julie Miller on Oct 28, 2002Comments: I'd like to add that I think the most important issues with the Graduate Center's computer system is that it is not reliable, and the computer department is profoundly unresponsive to requests for help. I don't bother to ask for help anymore, and use another email account as a backup. This is really an impossible situation particularly when trying to communicate with students, colleagues and potential employers, as I am doing now as I finish my dissertation.Flag
