Name: Janice Greene on Oct 28, 2002Comments: While I concur with the the petition, I am also very concerned about the limited availability of printers, which have become even less reliable than the computers themselves and less accessible. Given the large number of computers in the lab, having so few printers seems grossly inadequate. Not only do many students monopolize the printers with multiple copies of huge research papers and dissertations (especially in the evenings), but it seems that within the last year or two, two or three of the printers on any given day and with increasing frequency have been simultaneously inoperable! Furthermore, after the technicians leave for the day, and oftentimes while they are there, the lab runs out of paper (especially on weekends), leaving students to scrounge around and pilfer through wastecans for throw-away sheets. Yes, students can bring their own paper, but then the user seems unable to control the use of one's own paper, since it is difficult to tell with reliability which print jobs are pending besides your own, the status of those jobs, how large they are, etc. In other wrods, it is difficult to prevent someone else from rpinting on antoher student's paper supply. Moreover, since few students bring along thier own paper supply, getting re-imbursed for paper lsot to antoher student is nearly impossible.Flag

Name: C Moreno on Oct 28, 2002Comments: To the above mentioned problems, I would like to voice my strong objections on how the consultants desk, located in the basement, handles routine requests from faculty and students alike, particularly to requests about setting up or changing email passwords. At certain times there are inordinate delays for help by one consultant, when the other two consultants are obviously not busy. Yours C. Moreno, Faculty, PhD Program in MathFlag

Vital programs for a psych student have still not been installed on my computer. I lost two documents on Friday. .... and lots more such problems.Flag

Name: Christine Hegel on Oct 28, 2002Comments: As you can see from my email address, I do not even use my GC email account as my primary account because it is often difficult to access this account because the server is down or being serviced. These are critical issues and it is imperative that you make a commitment to improving information technology and not just idle promises. While we are glad to have so many computing facilities at the Graduate Center, there are of no use if the system is consistently down.Flag

Name: Ryan Swihart on Oct 28, 2002Comments: This is long overdue. Responsibility has been conspicuously absent from the way that IR approaches both technical problems and interpersonal communication. I would also like to add that, as far as i can tell, the lowest rungs of the IR pyramiud -- the people who actually fix our machines once their management-created delays have been overcome -- are usually cvompetent and friendly. They deserve better, asince they must take the brunt, in many cases, of the frustration that results from computing at the GC.Flag

Name: Ilisa Lam on Oct 28, 2002Comments: The issues the petition raises are of critical importance that reflect badly upon the level of professionalism at CUNY and the GC. I've encountered many problems during the course of using my GC address, and have been embarassed a number of times when mail sent to me from colleagues and professors at NYU, MIT, and other universities has been returned to their senders. I had to tell them to resend because our info tech services are spotty. I truly hope a more reliable and professional system will emerge to reflect better upon CUNY and its students. Many GC students don't even bother to use their GC addresses, and using an outside address doesn't reflect well upon young scholars who are trying to be taken seriously in larger academic communities in which we network and will try to earn our livelihoods one day. There are many other public university systems that have perfectly good info tech services, and the CUNY community deserves no less!Flag

Name: Ronnie Harmon on Oct 28, 2002Comments: I went through the lengthy and cumbersome process of obtaining a CUNY email address, then gave it up after a very short time because it was just too unreliable and badly managed. Couldn't get some emails, system went down often, assistance was limited.Flag
