I am a long time resident of Cumberland looking to set up a safe and fun environment for our dogs to play and socialize. The thought came to me when I was walking along the edge of the village park and noticed the $ 100 penalty for entering with your dog. I then came to realize that Cumberland (as well as the entire Comox Valley) has no set space for dogs to go socialize and play, besides the back woods which I am very uncomfortable going into on my own. I noticed that dog owners often enter the park with their dogs regardless of the warning, leading to an unwanted mess for park users. To have a designated area for this purpose would lead to a cleaner park and a happier community. I started talking to dog owners on my walks. Suggesting "hey maybe the little league at the Cumberland village park, it rarely gets used and it has essentially all the necessities any good dog park would have" many people agreed and thought that that it would be an economical solution. The dogs could have their place to play and the cost would not be very substantial. The only changes needed would be an extra gate on each dugout and a poop bag dispenser and garbage can. It was suggested that I take my dog Bentley to play at the Campbell River dog park in Willow Point. Being a popular spot for dogs in Campbell River he had the opportunity to interact with many different personalities. The benefits of socialization have really paid off and have made Bentley a safe and trustworthy dog. I hope that we can establish a dog park within the Village of Cumberland and provide a safe environment for all of the canine residents of Cumberland to develop and grow into the best dogs that they can be providing us with a safer and happier community.
